Newburyport High School – Student involvement is on the rise, whether it is through sports teams, academic programs, clubs, or student government. Students have the opportunity to participate in various activities before school, after school, and sometimes even during school. These programs are available to all students and are advertised at the beginning of each school year although they can typically join any club or activity at any time in the school year.
This week, Newburyport High School students hosted a club fair during all three lunch blocks in the cafeteria to encourage student engagement with the school and community.
“I think that the club fair allows students to be more involved without having to actually go to a club fair because everyone is at lunch so everybody gets a fair chance to see all of the clubs offered.” Said Lily Pilz, an NHS senior representing the Interact Club.
Lily described the Interact Club as “a community service club that partners with the Rotary Club to find service opportunities for kids who want to get involved in our community and help out the greater good. Also if you get 75 hours, which is actually pretty easy through our club, you can get 1.25 credits added to your transcript which is pretty cool.” This is an example of how many of the clubs offered are beneficial to the community as well as everyone involved in them. Not only do some clubs give students credit on their transcript, but they can be added to college applications which is beneficial to both the community and the students.
Another club represented at the Fair was Bring Change To Mind. Cassidy Bolcome, on behalf of the club stated that “Bring Change To Mind works to break the stigma around mental health in our school.” She also noted that they “hold a lot of events during the school day such as cookie decorating, we bring in therapy dogs and it provides a break during the day.”
“Students should join BC2M because it does provide a really good break from the school day because Newburyport is really competitive academically and athletically and these breaks just help to kind of calm everything down.” Cassidy added.
Finn Deveny, Environmental club representative who was at the Club Fair, said that getting involved in a club or activity is a way to “meet new people in a fun new way and participate in fun extracurricular activities, and people can learn about new topics that can spark their interests into doing something they are passionate about.”
These are just some of the clubs offered at Newburyport High School and just three perspectives of why you should get involved in some way with the school and community. If none of the clubs mentioned sparked your interest, there are many different options to choose from and there is guaranteed to be a club that you can get involved in.
