About The Report

Our Mission

Our mission, as students of this publication, is to fully engage our readers (the student’s of Newburyport High School), in the relevant and essential stories in our community. We acknowledge that this is a difficult task, but we hope to show them that this news is worth reading. We aim to use information that comes from reliable sources, that is factual, and creates products that our readers can trust and feel that they can relate to. We hope to make our readers feel heard and reflected. Our enthusiasm will be a driving force in creating an engaging and worthwhile publication.

Our Team

Lily DeJordy

Lily DeJordy is a junior at Newburyport High School who also lives in Newburyport. In the past she has conducted interviews in her Environmental Field Studies class. In a prior English class she wrote an Op-Ed about “Pink Tax” and she also received the Honors English award last school year. She is involved in the Executive Committee, Leos club, Interact Club, Bring Change to Mind club and she works at Newburyport Youth Services as a camp counselor. Lily is on the cross country and track teams and loves running, but she also enjoys the beach and spending time with family and friends.

Laurel Soward

Laurel Soward is a junior at NHS, and lives in Newburyport. She has written an OP-ED about the need for peace between Israel and Palestine. Soward also won second place in the Letters About Literature writing contest in 2021, and received an award in recognition of the competition from the governor.  In her freetime, she likes to shop and spend time with her friends and boyfriend. Soward is a part of Leo’s club, investment club and Student Council, and she also volunteers at Sweet Paws.

Tom Mettling

Tom Mettling is a student reporter who is currently attending Newburyport High School as a Junior. Mettling worked as a member of the Newburyport High School Action News in the second semester of the 2023-24 school year, and interviewed several members of the school and participated in other types of content such as the “Action News Ultimate Cook Off” and  “Burger Review”.  Mettling also wrote an Op-Ed about the current state of the MCAS. He is also a part of the schools Track team, Investment Club and volunteers weekly at Our Neighbor’s Table. Tom Mettling lives in Newburyport, Massachusetts and enjoys writing, watching movies, exercising and spending time with family and friends in his spare time.

Eilish Nye

Ellie Nye is a student reporter who is a senior at Newburyport High School. She has experience writing op-Eds and interviewing for her AP government class in which she covered the 2023 local election. She presented on two panels mediating a debate between the city candidates. She started out in school in North Carolina, but moved to Newburyport before her junior year, and has been in Massachusetts since. Nye is involved in film club, yearbook, and interact club. She became more involved in writing in 2024 as a result of her journalism class.

Martina Gutiérrez

Martina Gutiérrez is a junior and a student reporter in Newburyport high school, she used to live in Madrid, Spain but now she is staying in the US for this school year.

Back in Spain she won a school award for writing a story in 2021. She used to live in a big city with her parents and brother. In her free time she likes to watch movies, bake and spend time with her family and friends. Some members of her family are journalists so she used to write when she was younger.
